The Z-817 autotuner is explicitly designed for QRP radios, including the popular Yaesu FT-817(D). Using the included cable, it connects effortlessly to the CAT port (ACC) on the back of the FT-817. The tuning process is streamlined; with a single button press, the Z-817 automatically switches to PKT mode, transmits a carrier, tunes the antenna, and then returns the radio to its previous settings. This ease of use makes it an ideal companion for novice and experienced operators.

Equipped with 2000 memory slots, the Z-817 covers a wide frequency range from 160 to 6 meters, ensuring versatility for various operating conditions. In addition to its primary function with the FT-817, the Z-817 is a general-purpose antenna tuner for other QRP radios. Users can simply transmit a carrier and press the tune button to initiate the tuning process, making it a flexible tool for any QRP setup.

Powering the Z-817 is straightforward, as it runs on four AA internal Alkaline batteries, which are not included. This design eliminates the need for additional cables, enhancing portability. A coax jumper cable is necessary for quick connections. Notably, the tuner employs latching relays, resulting in zero power consumption when not in use, allowing the batteries to last approximately one year under normal operating conditions.
