What’s an Off-Centre Fed Dipole?

A traditional Dipole is a half-wavelength radiator, fed in the Centre with two equal length legs, the Off-Centre-Fed Dipole is a Dipole whose feedpoint is at a point removed from the centre of the antenna.

A traditional dipole is fed in the centre with 50-ohm coax, or more correctly through a 1:1 balun, whereas the off-centre fed dipole is fed through a 4:1 balun.

 

Why Off-Centre Feed a Dipole?

By moving the feedpoint of the dipole from the centre to off-centre, we create a multi-band antenna with multiple resonant points. We also change the feedpoint impedance and therefore need a carefully designed balun to provide a match to 50 ohms.

A centre fed dipole is only resonant at one single frequency, the off-centre fed dipole is resonant on multiple frequencies.

Your AS-HF-OCF-40 has been tested for resonance and is resonant on the 40M, 20M, 15M and 10M amateur bands and needs no ATU.

The antenna also offers a reasonable match on the 12M, 17M and 30M amateur bands but must be used with an ATU

What’s an End-Fed?

An end-fed antenna is tuned against ground whereby the physical ground forms half of a theoretical dipole.

This is a kit to enable you to construct an end-fed antenna in limited space.

 

Installation Suggestion

Drive the provided earth rod into the ground leaving about 6-9” protruding. Slip the eye ring of the balun over the earth rod and connect the rod to the green terminal with the cable provided. Take the wire at an angle to the top of a support to create a sloping antenna.`

By careful design of the balun and length of the antenna, your AS-EF-33-HP has the following SWR from 0 – 30MHz:

Think of a Carolina Windom as an upside-down vertical antenna. The horizontal section is the counterpoise, and the vertical radiator the main antenna.

Because the antenna is not fed at its centre, the RF currents in each horizontal radiating section are very much unequal. This makes the vertical coaxial feedline radiate RF energy and become part of the antenna. This results in a very effective omni-directional radiation pattern and also an excellent general-purpose antenna for the SWL.

How Should I Use It?

The antenna should be installed as high as possible and clear from other nearby objects. The vertical radiator must not be close to metal objects (like masts) and should be in free air.

Where is it Resonant?

By careful design of the antenna, the Carolina Windom has resonant points in the 40M, 20M and 10M amateur bands. The antenna can also be used in other HF bands with the use of an ATU.

What’s a City Windom?

A city windom is a unique end-fed antenna design featuring a long wire plus a resonant matching network comprising a balun, a length of RG-58 and a line isolator.

The City-Windom behaves much like a normal Windom but is better suited to suburbia and can be suspended from a window to a suitable anchor point.

 

How Should I Use It?

There are three recommended configurations of the City Windom.

Note: depending on your installation, antenna height above ground, angle of installation et cetera, the antenna may need peeking to resonance. Extra wire is included at the end of antenna but folded back to enable you to extend or shorten the antenna as necessary.

What’s a City Windom?

A city windom is a unique end-fed antenna design featuring a long wire plus a resonant matching network comprising a balun, a length of RG-58 and a line isolator.

The City-Windom behaves much like a normal Windom but is better suited to suburbia and can be suspended from a window to a suitable anchor point.

 

How Should I Use It?

There are three recommended configurations of the City Windom.

Option 1:

Sloper

Option 2:

Horizontal

Option 3:

‘L’ Configuration

Note: depending on your installation, antenna height above ground, angle of installation et cetera, the antenna may need peeking to resonance.

 

Where is it Resonant?

By careful design of the balun and feedpoint of the antenna, your AS-HF-OCF-40-HP has the following SWR from 0 – 30MHz:
