Kenwood TS-590SG stands out in the realm of amateur radio transceivers with its advanced features, particularly the inclusion of a 500 Hz/2.7 kHz roofing filter as standard. This model employs a down-conversion technique at the 1st IF frequency of 11.374 MHz when operating on popular bands such as 15, 20, 40, 80, or 160 meters. This design enhances adjacent channel receptivity, allowing exceptional dynamic range performance. Even in strong interfering signals, the TS-590SG maintains a virtually flat dynamic range, ensuring operators can capture clear signals under challenging reception conditions.
The transceiver also incorporates advanced Automatic Gain Control (AGC) through digital signal processing, optimising performance across various input levels. Building on the technology developed for the TS-990S, the TS-590SG’s AGC circuitry has been remodelled to provide superior control, allowing users to operate without constantly adjusting for varying Roofing Filter bandwidths. This capability is particularly beneficial during long contests, where the quality of received audio is crucial for operator endurance and effectiveness.
Additional features of the TS-590SG include a Morse code decoder that displays received code on a 13-segment display and programmable function keys for quick access to frequently used settings. The new split function simplifies frequency adjustments, while the robust design ensures reliability during extended operations. With improved RX performance, a tri-colour LCD, and enhanced DSP capabilities, the TS-590SG represents a significant upgrade over its predecessor, the TS-590S, catering to the needs of severe amateur radio enthusiasts.
